The Māori Health Research Emerging Leader Fellowships are intended to provide support for the development of mid- to senior-career Māori researchers. In the context of these fellowships, a Māori health research emerging leader is defined as someone who has demonstrated contribution to Māori health research and, through a clear development pathway, has exceptional potential to develop into a leader in their field. Up to $650,000 is available over four years.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants are required to be of Māori decent and their principal domicile and place of employment must be Aotearoa New Zealand to be eligible for a 2024 Māori Health Research Emerging Leader Fellowship.

Applicants must have held a PhD or equivalent degree for four to twelve years at the date of application submission.

Your application must also have the support of your host institution.

How do I apply?

First, you’ll need to ensure that you have an up-to-date profile on HRC Gateway. You will then need to complete an online registration form via HRC Gateway to signal your intention to apply for a 2024 Māori Health Research Emerging Leader Fellowship. Following registration, you’ll need to submit a full application online via HRC Gateway using the 2024 Māori Health Research Emerging Leader Fellowship Application Form and Excel Budget File. Your application will be assessed by an assessing committee. The assessing committee will produce a short-list of applicants who will be invited for an interview with the committee. Following the interview, the assessing committee will discuss and score the short-listed applications. Outcomes of the interview and the subsequent committee assessment will be used to determine the successful applications.
