2021 Pacific Emerging Researcher First Grants
These grants support emerging Pacific researchers who are seeking to establish independent careers in health research. Each grant is worth up to $250,000 over a maximum of three years (research expenses only).
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for a Pacific emerging researcher first grant, you'll need to be a New Zealand citizen or hold residency in New Zealand, and be of indigenous Pacific descent.
You're not eligible for this grant if you're studying for a PhD or have held a competitive research grant as a first-named investigator for research expenses of greater or equal to $105,000 from any source at the time of assessment. Normally, you must also be no more than six years from attaining a postgraduate degree, however, this period could be longer to account for situations like parental leave or ill health.
Application process
Firstly, you'll need to register your intention to submit an application for an emerging researcher first grant. Registration is done online via HRC Gateway. Following registration, you'll then need to submit a full application online via HRC Gateway using the 2021 Pacific emerging researcher first grants application form. All full applications will undergo an external review by qualified reviewers and will be scored by an assessing committee who will then make funding recommendations to the HRC.
Choosing a research investment stream
Our investment framework is made up of four research investment streams. If you're applying for a Pacific emerging researcher first grant, you'll need to specify which research investment stream your application applies to. We can't advise you on which research investment stream to choose. We highly recommend that you review the HRC's research investment streams document under 'Helpful links' to guide your decision. Our research investment streams are:
- Health and wellbeing in New Zealand - Keeping populations healthy and independent throughout life
- Improving outcomes for acute and chronic conditions in New Zealand - Improving outcomes for people with illness or injury
- New Zealand health delivery - Improving health and disability service delivery outcomes over the short-to-medium term
