2021 Emerging Researcher First Grants

These grants support emerging researchers who are seeking to establish independent careers in health research. Up to a maximum of $250,000 for three years is available. Please note: these grants don't provide a salary for the first-named investigator.

Eligibility criteria

For the purpose of these grants, we define an emerging researcher as "someone who is at the beginning of their research career in health with a clear development path and is working in a strongly supportive research environment". To be eligible for these grants, you can't be studying for a PhD or have previously held a competitive research grant for research expenses of greater than or equal to $105,000 from any source (including institutional or internal funding). You must also be no more than six years from attaining a most recent postgraduate degree (although this period could be greater to account for parental leave etc.) and be developing an independent research stream.

Application process

Firstly, you'll need to register your intention to submit an application for the emerging researcher first grants. Registration must be completed online via HRC Gateway. Following registration, you'll then need to submit a full application online via HRC Gateway using the 2021 Emerging Researcher First Grant application form form provided on this page.  All full applications will undergo an external review by qualified reviewers and will be scored by an assessing committee who will then make funding recommendations to the HRC Board.

Choosing a research investment stream

Our investment framework is made up of four research investment streams. If you're applying for an emerging researcher first grant you need to specify which research investment stream your application applies to. We can't advise you on which research investment stream to choose. We highly recommend that you review the HRC's research investment streams document under 'Helpful links' to guide your decision. Our research investment streams are:

  • Health and wellbeing in New Zealand - Keeping populations healthy and independent throughout life
  • Improving outcomes for acute and chronic conditions in New Zealand - Improving outcomes for people with illness or injury
  • New Zealand health delivery - Improving health and disability service delivery outcomes over the short-to-medium term
  • Rangahau hauora Māori - Supporting Māori health research that upholds rangatiratanga and uses and advances Māori health knowledge, resources, and people
