2020 Enhancing New Zealand’s Clinical Trials RFP

The Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) have formed a funding initiative to facilitate the development of a sustainable, nationally coordinated and equitable clinical trials enterprise in New Zealand.

The funding partners are seeking to fund high-quality research that will describe the strengths, gaps and areas of need for clinical trials systems and data infrastructure in the New Zealand public healthcare system, review related international evidence and best practice, and develop evidence-based recommendations to inform policy for clinical trials infrastructure in New Zealand.

A funding pool of $800,000 (exclusive of GST) is available and applications for funding of up to $800,000 (fully-costed, exclusive of GST) and duration of up to 15 months are invited.

It is anticipated that the contracted project will begin as soon as practicable, with funding available for an immediate start following notification of outcomes in August 2020.

The proposed research must be within the scope of this initiative as specified in this RFP and must realistically be able to be completed within the prescribed maximum timeframe of 15 months.

Eligibility criteria

If you're the first-named investigator (i.e. lead researcher) on a partnership application, you must be based in New Zealand and employed with a New Zealand host organisation.

Collaborating researchers from outside New Zealand can, at the HRC’s discretion, be included as named investigators on a HRC contract. However, the HRC will not contribute to the overhead of the overseas investigator, and the total proportion of contract budget allocated to overseas investigators must not exceed 20 percent.

For more information about our contract requirements, please read the HRC Rules document under 'Helpful links'.

Application process

If you’re applying for funding through this partnership you’ll need to submit a registration via HRC Gateway. You’ll then need to complete a full application using the 2020 Enhancing New Zealand’s Clinical Trials Application Form. You will also need to complete the 2020 Enhancing New Zealand’s Clinical Trials Budget Form. Full applications are submitted via HRC Gateway and two hard copies sent to the HRC.

Investigator Briefing Meeting

The HRC and Ministry of Health will host an Investigator Briefing Meeting in Wellington on 19 February 2020 from 1pm to 3pm. This will be an information session to discuss the RFP, application and assessment process, and will provide an opportunity to liaise with other interested parties. Please register your interest with Scott Aitken by 5 February 2020. The HRC Partnership Programme team will contact registered parties to confirm details of this Meeting.
