The HRC, with the support of the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment, has joined the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD). The GACD is an alliance of the world’s largest public research funding agencies, and provides new research opportunities that target chronic diseases. GACD funds joint programmes researching lifestyle-related or chronic disease such as heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and lung diseases.
Our first initiative with the GACD is to partner with the Ministry of Health to provide up to $2 million in funding to research better strategies to support Māori and Pacific youth with mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar affective disorders.
If you're the first-named investigator (i.e. lead researcher) on an application for this call, you must be employed with an eligible host organisation based in New Zealand. Your research team will need to have demonstrated expertise in undertaking health research and to collectively have the skills appropriate to complete the proposed research. As this call is focused on implementation research, your team needs to include researchers with extensive clinical, and/or policy and/or service provider experience. The research must take place primarily within New Zealand, although parts of the research can be undertaken in the Pacific region.
Firstly, you'll need to register your intention to submit an application to the HRC-GACD fund. Registration must be completed online via HRC Gateway. We'll need the following at the registration stage: research title; first-named investigator; other named investigators; and a lay summary of the proposed research. Following registration, you'll then need to submit a full application online via HRC Gateway and send a hardcopy to the HRC. GACD will assess the applications (rather than the HRC) using the GACD assessment criteria. If your application is successful, you'll be notified in December 2017.
