Explorer grants support transformative research ideas that have a good chance of making a revolutionary change to how we manage New Zealanders' health. They are available in any health research discipline and are worth $150,000 for a term of up to 24 months.
To be eligible for an explorer grant, your application must advance ideas, methodologies, tools or technologies considered to be transformative, innovative, exploratory or unconventional, and have potential for major impact. An impact on knowledge is valid, and the idea doesn't need to be immediately applicable in terms of a health outcome. Applications can include any health-related research in the clinical, Kaupapa Māori, basic, behavioural, social, public-health and translational sciences; and may encompass novel hypotheses, methods, tools, technologies, and/or conceptual frameworks.
Applications for explorer grants are assessed by subpanels within the HRC's Explorer Grant Assessing Committee to see if they meet the criteria of being both transformative and viable. Unlike with any of our other grants, the assessment process for explorer grant applications is anonymous and all applications that meet the criteria are equally eligible to receive funding. A random number generator prioritises these applications.
Choosing a research investment stream
Our investment framework is made up of four research investment streams. If you're applying for an explorer grant, you'll need to specify which research investment stream your application applies to. We can't advise you on which research investment stream to choose. We highly recommend that you review the HRC's research investment streams document under 'Helpful links' to guide your decision. Our research investment streams are:
- Health and wellbeing in New Zealand - Keeping populations healthy and independent throughout life
- Improving outcomes for acute and chronic conditions in New Zealand - Improving outcomes for people with illness or injury
- New Zealand health delivery - Improving health and disability service delivery outcomes over the short-to-medium term
- Rangahau hauora Māori - Supporting Māori health research that upholds rangatiratanga and uses and advances Māori health knowledge, resources, and people.
